Happy New Year!  Welcome to ChildCare Education Institute’s January 2007 newsletter!  

This January, CCEI focuses on motivating early childhood professionals to improve relationships with parents. Positive communication with parents can make a tremendous difference in the atmosphere of your center and directly affects the attitudes and level of contentment experienced by children, staff, and parents. 

What can you do to promote family involvement in your child care center? Edna Wallace’s intriguing article, Hands-On Approach to Nurturing the Parent Partnership, discusses practical ways you can involve parents in center events and tap into the many resources they may be able to provide for your center and the children in your care. Building Partnerships: Teachers & Parents Working Together,  by Carolyn Ross Tomlin, delves deeper into the establishment and cultivation of positive relationships between teachers and parents by providing appropriate responses to often-asked questions parents may have. As you begin 2007, perhaps it’s time to renew your commitment to creating positive relationships with parents. Consider what steps you can take to ensure children and their families receive the ultimate care and consideration from your child care center!

Positive communication with parents is essential for the establishment, maintenance, and growth of a successful child care center. Creating trust between parents and caregivers involves the establishment of an open communication system.  An open communication system benefits caregivers, parents, and children. By opening channels of communication, caregivers may learn about a child’s home life and the personal goals parents have for their children. Parents will be better able to understand the school environment and learning objectives established by teachers. By working together in a consistent manner, parents and teachers can provide children with an optimal environment for learning and overall success.

There are three ways caregivers and administrators communicate with parents: verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and written communication. Let’s take a moment to explore verbal communication skills. Verbal communication encompasses both listening and speaking. To be an effective communicator, both sets of skills must be developed. 

Practice the art of listening when communicating with parents. Parents appreciate a listener who is able to block out distractions, provide appropriate feedback, and effectively interpret what is being said.  Listening is an important part of conflict resolution.  If a parent is concerned about something, it is important to listen well in order to understand exactly what the problem is. Put yourself in the parent’s position, and respect the parent’s opinion. By making yourself open to a parent’s advice, you may gain a heightened appreciation for the parent’s situation, which will allow you to interact with the child in a more appropriate and effective manner.

Speaking skills are an equally important part of verbal communication. When speaking with parents, strive to create a comfortable atmosphere.  This may be accomplished by paying attention to length of speech, tone, volume, and words.  It is important not to dominate a conversation. Don’t interrupt when a parent is speaking to you. Avoid negative tones, including sarcasm, disgust, and condescension.  Keep a cheerful tone, and speak at a pleasant volume. Finally, it is important to focus on the positive.  Avoid saying things that may restrict the flow of communication.  When you want to discuss a concern about a child with a parent, it is helpful to start and end with something positive about the child.

Consider the many ways you communicate with parents each day. Is there one particular area that needs improvement? If so, brainstorm ways that you may be able to sharpen your skills in that area.  CCEI520 Parent Communication: Building Partners in the Educational Process provides students with an in-depth study of the development of effective communication skills. ChildCare Education Institute is also pleased to offer CCEI961 Parenting Children Ages 1 to 4. This course allows caregivers to consider the unique challenges parents face each day and consider these challenges from the parent’s point of view.

CCEI is an approved provider of Child Care professional development and the CDA Credential Coursework. The Online Instructor Led Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Program provides each student with an Education Coach, who is an experienced child care professional, to assist with coursework and applying for the credential.

You can earn 120 hours or 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) which meet the coursework requirements of the CDA, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with our online access. College Credit for this course of study program can be articulated to an AA Degree in Early Childhood Education for students enrolled in the college CDA Program. Non-college credit options are available.


The Online Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Program allows students to work independently on the coursework needed to earn the required 120 hours.

You can earn 120 hours or 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) which meet the coursework requirements of the CDA, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with our online access.


A CDA Renewal is valid for three years from the date of the award, after which time it may be renewed for five year periods. CCEI offers the required professional development coursework for CDA Renewal Candidates.


CCEI provides a specialized professional development credential for the child care director. Courses provide a concentrated study in the areas that must be mastered to be successful as a child care management team member. College credits are available when dual enrolled through University of Cincinnati .


An annual renewal program will be offered which requires 25 clock hour training in early childhood administration. These advanced courses can be taken as a part of CCEI's ongoing professional development subscription program. There is no college credit available for this renewal certificate. Renewal must be kept up to date annually in order to maintain the CCDC certificate standard.


ChildCare Education Institute (CCEI) has an articulation agreement with the University of Cincinnati to offer students the ability to pursue a college degree. Many CCEI courses are eligible for articulation to the University of Cincinnati Online Early Childhood Associate Degree.
